What is HP wireless direct printing?

Printers with HP wireless direct let you skip both the cables and the wireless network but still offer hassle-free, wireless printing! How? They emit their own wireless signal!
When HP wireless direct printing is on, connecting your computer to the HP wireless direct signal is the same as connecting to any other broadcasted wireless network, except you won't have Internet access.
Many new HP LaserJets, Officejets, and Photosmarts support HP wireless direct printing. To see if your printer supports this feature, check its manual. If you don't see this option on its display, try updating the printer's firmware.1

With HP wireless direct, you can print from smartphones and tablets when you use a compatible print app like Apple AirPrint™. 2
With HP wireless direct printing, you're able to print from practically any wireless device, including laptops and PCs, plus smartphones and tablets. And, up to five devices can connect to any HP wireless direct printer at one time.
What's needed to print:
On a computer: To use HP wireless direct on a computer, be sure you've installed the HP printer driver. During installation, choose "Connect to a wireless network" as your connection choice. Then connect to the printer's wireless signal to print.
On a smartphone or tablet: To print from a wireless device, you'll need an HP printer app, such as the HP ePrint Home & Biz app.
On an Apple device: If you're using Apple AirPrint™ on an iPhone® or iPad®, make sure the printer supports both HP wireless direct printing and AirPrint.2

Connectivity
No matter how your printer is connected, you don't have to choose just one way to print! HP wireless direct printing works right along side an Ethernet or wireless network. The printer can also be set up as a stand-alone device; it does not need to be part of a network.
Range and security
HP wireless direct has the same range as other standard wireless networks using 802.11g and 802.11n, meaning anyone within range can have access.
Security
HP wireless direct can only be accessed within the printer's wireless range.
If the printer is connected to a secure wireless network, you can limit access further by turning on the printer's network security and creating an 8-digit WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access) password. only those who know the password can connect to the printer. This function can also be easily activated or disabled from the printer's touchscreen display.3

Turn on HP wireless direct printing

It's easy to turn HP wireless direct printing on or off using the printer's touchscreen display.
The following steps are for the HP TopShot LaserJet Pro M275nw, but will be similar on most models. To activate HP wireless direct from the printer's touchscreen:
1. Select the Setup Menu.
2. Select Network Setup.
3. Select Wireless Menu.
4. Select Wireless Direct Settings.
5. Select Wireless Direct on/Off.
6. Select On.
TIP: If you do not see these options, updating the printer might provide this feature.1
If you have an HP Officejet or Photosmart with HP wireless direct, you can set the printer's security settings to prevent unauthorized people from connecting to the printer.3
To turn on security:
1. Select the Setup Menu.
2. Select Network Setup.
3. Select Wireless Menu.
4. Select Wireless Direct Settings.
5. Select Security.
6. Select On.
7. To view the security passcode, touch Passcode.

Print wirelessly from your mobile device

Step 2: From your Apple device's Wireless Settings, select the desired printer from the list of available wireless networks.

Step 3:From the document's menu, select Print. The printer from step two will show as your desired printer-simply hit Print!
To use HP wireless direct printing from a smartphone or tablet, make sure you have a print application installed on the mobile device, such as the HP ePrint Home & Biz or HP ePrint service apps.
If using an Apple device, AirPrint™ comes built-in and you will not need to download an app to print.2
To print from an Apple device:
1. Discover: From the device's Settings menu, turn on its wireless connection. The activated HP wireless direct printer will appear on the list of available networks.
TIP: HP wireless direct printers will always start with "HP-Print" followed by the printer's model name, for example: HP-Print-c4-LaserJet 200. You can also access the model name from the Wireless Direct menu on the printer's display.
2. Select: Choose the desired printer from the wireless network list. You may also need to know the HP wireless direct password, if applicable. This is available on the Wireless Direct menu on the printer's display.
3. Print: Open the image or document to print and choose the menu icon from the toolbar. Select Print. The printer from step two will show as your desired printer. Choose the number of copies you want and hit Print!

Print wirelessly from your PC or laptop

HP's wireless direct lets you print from a laptop or PC without setting up a wireless router.
Before printing from your PC or laptop, you'll need to connect to the Internet to download the printer's software. However, once you've done so, you won't need to connect to the Internet again to use HP wireless direct printing.
The steps to print from a computer are almost exactly the same as those for smartphones and tablets:
1. Discover: From the computer's Preferences or Settings menu, open the wireless settings and turn on its wireless connection. Activated HP wireless direct printers will appear on the list of available networks.
2. Select: Choose the desired printer from the list of wireless networks. You may also need to know the Wireless Direct password, if applicable.
3. Print: Open the image or document to print and print as usual. The printer you chose in step two will show as your selected printer. Adjust any print settings and then click Print.
